If you end up getting a coat If you are a short person and you find a coat that fits across the shoulders and around the bust and the waist and over the hips, you may think that that's all you need to be concerned about. Another problem with getting plus size coats in a size that is too large for you, is that they are often too long. With some alterations, the coat loses that draping quality. Well made plus size coats are cut to hit your body in certain ways, and hang and drape in certain ways.

But if you do not have a technical know-how or know a good tailor to shorten the sleeves and take up the shoulders, then you end up with sleeves that are out of proportion with the rest of the coat. They can be too shortened and the shoulder seam that hangs down too low in your arm can be taken up. If you are wearing a coat that is too big, one of the options you might choose is to have it altered but no matter how cleverly you tailor the sleeves, they often still look wrong. Sure, maybe the coat feels all right to the wearer but to the observer, the coat just looks wrong. There's a feeling that the bigger and more floating the coat is, the better you look.

One of the big mistakes a lot of women make when they are shopping for plus size coats is they get coats that are the wrong size for them.
